Three More Years of Counter-Trafficking Support to Ukrainian Rural Communities

The Swiss Confederation continues its support to preventing human trafficking through social work and strengthening communities in Ukraine.
According to Guido Beltrani, Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Ukraine, the project, implemented by the International Organization for Migration in partnership with the NGOs Child Well-Being Fund of Ukraine and the Western Ukrainian Resource Centre since 2009, will continue for three more years.

Czech Embassy Supports Children at IOM’s Partner Orphanage

Members of the Tourism Guild at a Konotop orphanage and boarding school can look forward to the spring, with brand new hiking gear and sporting equipment donated by the Czech Embassy to Ukraine. To the children’s great delight, on 9 February 2012, Czech Ambassador Ivan Počuch and his wife Martina Počuchová delivered hiking boots, tents, sleeping bags and mats, climbing ropes, carbines and backpacks for the young hikers, as well as a ping pong table and sledges for all pupils. Additionally, the Czech food manufacturer Hamé donated 200 bottles of fruit juice for children.

IOM Encourages Ukrainian Youth to Get Positive Experience of Cultural Diversity

A public awareness campaign inviting next generation of Ukrainian men and women to “Experience Cultural Diversity!” has been launched in Ukraine by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) with the support of the American Bar Association and the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour, of the U.S. Department of State.
International Master in Sports, well-known automobile expert and musician of the band “Indianapolis” Oleksii Mochanov and “Mandry” band frontman Serhii Fomenko (Foma) starred in the PSAs, campaigning for tolerance and supporting cultural diversity among Ukrainian youth.

Memorandum on Cooperation with the State Migration Service of Ukraine Signed

At a ceremony held at IOM Ukraine’s office a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed by The Head of the State Migration Service (SMS) Oleksandr Zabrudskyi and IOM Ukraine’s Chief of Mission Manfred Profazi. The Memorandum aims to consolidate efforts in promoting humane and orderly migration through, inter alia, addressing the challenges of irregular migration, ensuring the rights of foreigners and stateless persons, protecting victims of trafficking and promoting the reintegration of Ukrainian citizens returning from abroad.
The Head of the State Migration Service Oleksandr Zabrudskyi underlined that the SMS is honoured to have “such an influential and respected partner as IOM”.

Migration affects all countries – and so do myths and misperceptions about its impact.
There are many false assumptions surrounding migration.
One such myth is that migrants are a burden. In reality, migrants make vast contributions to host countries. As workers, they bring skills. As entrepreneurs, they create jobs. As investors, they bring capital. In advanced and emerging economies, they play an indispensible role in agriculture, tourism and domestic work. Migrants often care for the youngest and oldest members of society.
People view irregular migration as a crime. Many think migrants who lack proper documents are a danger to society and should be detained, or that all women who migrate to take up low-skilled jobs have been trafficked.

National Auto Rally Raises Awareness on Trafficking for Transplantation of Human Organs

IOM Ukraine’s partner NGOs are at a national auto rally this week, campaigning against trafficking for transplantation of human organs. Under the slogan “Only Cars for Spare Parts” the activists are driving through 10 oblasts of Ukraine, stopping to disseminate leaflets and conduct short trainings at schools and colleges of small towns and villages en route of the auto rally.
The auto rally will pass through Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskiy, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zakarpattia, and Rivne oblasts. Dnipropetrovsk oblast was the first one to see the auto rally on Friday, 25 November. The National Auto Rally will finish on 2 December, the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery.

Ethnic Koreans in the South of Ukraine Receive Integration Assistance

Ethnic Koreans living in Dzhankoi district of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea received micro-loans for the development of their small businesses and fostering their better integration into the socio-economical life of the Crimean Peninsula.
During the ceremony held at Dzhankoi District Administration, IOM Ukraine’s Project Manager Vlad Ostryanskiy presented certificates for UAH 20,000 loans to six ethic Koreans. The project is funded by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and implemented by IOM Ukraine through partner NGOs in Crimea, Kherson, Mykolayiv, Odesa, Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kirovohrad regions.
